Asphalt Paving Essentials Workshop

CPD: Up to 18 Hours
Level of difficulty: Intermediate

To achieve a high-quality asphalt mat, technical knowledge and onsite management are essential. Key aspects like compaction, joint construction, mix handling, and paving sequence planning must be executed with precision for durable and smooth pavements. Supervisors and engineers should use their experience and understanding of materials to complete projects on time and within budget, meeting industry standards.

The AfPA Asphalt Paving in Practice program is recognised as a benchmark for competence in asphalt paving and is recommended by road authorities for enhancing the skills of supervisors and engineers.

Course Benefits

Participants will learn how to reduce paving defects, maximise pavement life, and ensure value for money through a structured approach to planning, placing, and compacting asphalt. The program focuses on minimising joints, optimising density, and ensuring compliance with Austroads Guides and state specifications.

Scope
  • Different asphalt mix types and their functions
  • Paving sequence planning and logistics
  • Placement and compaction practices
  • Joint construction and finishing techniques
  • Field quality monitoring, testing, and troubleshooting

Participants will engage with practical case studies, real-world examples, and interactive group exercises to identify materials and mix issues, diagnose paving faults, and apply best practices for paving and compaction controls.

Who should attend?

This program is designed for:

  • Asphalt supervisors
  • Engineers and consultants
  • Senior Managers
  • Project managers
  • Inspectors
  • State and Local Government Officers
Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the functions of different asphalt courses and mix types
  • Plan and supervise asphalt paving and compaction activities
  • Monitor field quality using delivery dockets, temperature checks, and segregation assessments
  • Identify and diagnose common mix and paving deficiencies
  • Apply best practices for compaction control, joint construction, and finishing techniques
  • Reference Austroads guidance and state-based specifications to ensure compliance
