Advance your environmental reporting practice with the tools and technical knowledge to generate product-specific life cycle assessment results.

Presented by Norbert Michel, Director and Principal Consultant at Michel Consulting and Enterprises Pty Ltd, and Rob Rouwette, Director and Principal Consultant at start2see Pty Ltd, AfPA delivers a technical session on the AfPA LCA Calculator v2.0. Whether you work in asphalt production, product innovation and development, sustainability reporting, are considering developing EPDs for your products, or even if you work at a council, state road authority or other stakeholder organisation and want to see how the updated calculator has functionality tailored to you, this session provides the technical knowledge and practical guidance to apply the updated calculator with confidence.

The calculator supports a wide range of users with varying levels of access to asphalt plant data. Asphalt producers with access to detailed plant and product data can undertake the most detailed and comprehensive analyses using the calculator. The introduction of default asphalt plants gives intermediate users the option to test the effect of changing asphalt mix designs, while in its simplest setting the user can select a combination of standard asphalt products and a default asphalt plant. The session outlines how the updated calculator strengthens industry capability to generate environmental product declarations (EPDs) efficiently and more cost-effectively.

Applications and future development
The session will demonstrate how the updated calculator supports industry applications including detailed asphalt plant production analysis and product mix carbon estimation. Attendees will receive insight into planned future developments positioning the calculator as a core industry tool for EPD generation.

  • Asphalt plant production efficiency analysis: Detailed facility-level data allow for a more accurate assessment of production processes, material inputs, and associated environmental impacts.
  • Product mix evaluation: Users can now assess the environmental footprint across unique and contemporary mix types, supported by expanded binder and materials libraries.

Technical enhancements

  • Standards alignment and inventory
    • Alignment with EN 15804+A2 requirements and environmental indicators
    • Revised life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets, including updated carbon footprint contributions from key materials (Bitumen, hydrated lime, crumb rubber, crushed glass sand, and additives)
    • New materials added to the calculator support a more refined analysis of asphalt products
  • Electricity accounting and reporting
    • Two electricity accounting methods: market-based accounting (default) and location-based accounting
    • Expanded reporting capability across EN 15804+A2 indicators:
      • Full results tables aligned with EPD structure, covering cradle-to-gate stages (Modules A1 to A3) and end-of-life stages (Modules C and D)
      • Detailed cradle-to-gate breakdown by material and process contribution
      • Detailed breakdown by life cycle stage (module) for each EN 15804+A2 indicator
      • EN 15804+A1 results maintained with expanded reporting detail
    • Reporting outputs enhanced to better support EPD development and sustainability assessments
  • Version comparability
    • The session will explain why results from AfPA LCA Calculator v2.0 cannot be directly compared with outputs from previous calculator versions

Usability improvements

  • User modes and default configurations
    • Tiered user modes introduced (Comprehensive, Intermediate, Simplified, and Customised) to support a wider range of users and use cases
    • Default plant profiles and product mix libraries implemented for streamlined analysis
    • Updated reporting outputs designed to align with specific use case requirements
