Sprayed Seal Essentials Workshop
CPD: Up to 18 CPD hours
Level of difficulty: Intermediate
3 days – Austroads-aligned
Overview
The Sprayed Seal Essentials Workshop builds the technical and supervisory capability required to plan, deliver, and assure spray sealing works that perform. Long-term seal performance depends on sound understanding of materials, design principles, construction controls, and quality assurance. Decisions made before and during construction; binder selection, application rates, aggregate properties, weather windows, traffic management, translate directly to seal life, safety, and whole-of-life cost.
This three-day program reflects current industry best practice. Content aligns with Austroads guidance, including AGPT04K seal design methodology, and current state-based specifications. AfPA Essentials programs are recognised by state and local road authorities as benchmark training for developing competency in supervisors, engineers, and practitioners.
The National Pathway
Sprayed Seal Essentials extends AfPA’s flexible pavement training pathway into spray sealing. Together with Asphalt Paving Essentials, the two programs deliver the complete national essentials pathway across flexible pavements; a single, consistent standard of capability development across the two surfacing disciplines that account for Australia’s sealed road network.
Who Should Attend
This program is designed for professionals involved in the planning, delivery, and oversight of spray sealing works:
- Spray seal supervisors
- Engineers and consultants
- Senior managers and project managers
- Inspectors
- State and local government officers
What You’ll Cover
Day 1: Fundamentals and Seal Design
Spray seal types and function within asset management. Seal selection across traffic categories, pavement condition, and climate. Binder and aggregate properties. Binder and aggregate application rate design, including correction factors for traffic, texture, climate, and absorption.
Day 1 outcome: Participants complete a compliant AGPT04K seal design calculation.
Day 2: Construction Practice and Quality Assurance
Pre-construction planning, surface preparation, and weather windows. Plant and equipment calibration, including sprayer, aggregate spreader, and rolling configuration. Construction process control. Quality assurance, hold points, ITPs, and daily records.
Day 2 outcome: Participants supervise spray sealing operations and implement compliant QA processes.
Day 3: Troubleshooting, Risk Management and Field Application
Common seal defects; aggregate loss, flushing, bleeding, streaking, stripping, low texture depth, with causes and remedies. High-stress and special applications, including intersections, braking zones, SAM and SAMI seals, and heavy vehicle routes. A team-based integrated case study covering selection, design, QA planning, and risk identification, followed by knowledge assessment.
Day 3 outcome: Participants diagnose seal failures, apply risk mitigation strategies, and integrate design, construction, and QA knowledge into real-world scenarios.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate spray seal types and select appropriate seals for traffic, pavement condition, and environment
- Apply binder and aggregate properties to compliant application rate design
- Plan and supervise spray sealing operations in line with best practice
- Monitor field quality through application rates, temperatures, and QA records
- Identify and diagnose common spray seal defects

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s included?
Three days of structured learning, course materials, refreshments and lunch, certificate of attendance, and post-workshop resource access.
Will I be assessed?
The program includes a knowledge assessment and a team-based integrated case study on Day 3.
Is this suitable if I’m new to spray sealing?
The program is pitched at intermediate level. Participants benefit most when they bring prior exposure to flexible pavements. AfPA’s Flexible Pavements course is recommended as a foundation for those new to the sector.
Is content aligned to state specifications?
Yes. Content aligns with Austroads guidance and current state-based specifications.
Are group bookings available?
Yes. Three or more registrations from the same organisation receive the group rate. For organisation-wide bookings, contact training@afpa.asn.au.
